History of the Chicago Gems

<-- Gems History, Part 1

2006
The goals of the Gems organization for 2006 were summarized by the phrase "more players, more games." Both goals were achieved, as the roster grew to over 20 players and the Gems played series against the Detoit Diesel and the amongst themselves in intrasquad scrimmages. The Gems also participated in the Roy Hobbs Vegas, BWI and Roy Hobbs World Series tournaments.

The Gems opened their season on May 20 against the Detroit Diesel. They dropped the first game, but won the second 12-11, for their first victory ever.

The Gems played several intrasquad scrimmages throughout the summer, giving the players an opportunity to get game experience without having to travel hours away to play one of the few women's teams in the area.

In the summer of 2006, Gems management met with the president of a local men's league, the Midwest Suburban League, to discuss the possibility of forming a women's division. Both groups agreed this would be a good idea, so the Gems began recruiting for the 2007 season in the fall of 2006 with a "Get into the Game" clinic and practices in September and October.

The Gems once again participated in the Roy Hobb's World Series. The Gems played six games in 48 hours, which would have been exhausting except we were having too much fun to notice. The Gems notched their first tournament victory, defeating the Sabres in the first round of the playoffs 11-10. Newcomer Jill B was named team MVP. Tournament recap
